Breast: Breast Reconstruction Surgery
A complete breast reconstruction surgery aims to restore the breast to its initial shape, appearance, and size, using similar procedures applied in mastectomy for breast cancer.
Who is it recommended for?
This procedure is ideal for women who have been put under the total or partial extirpation of one or both breasts. This procedure can be immediate or delayed.
Did you know…? Around 90% of women prefer to have an immediate reconstruction.
Is an immediate reconstruction always recommended?
In some cases, surgeons do not recommend an immediate reconstruction for patients with:
Other untreated conditions (diabetes and high blood pressure),
Oncologic contra-indications.
Risk factors such as age, obesity, and smoking that must be assessed in each patient.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure follows 3 steps:
The reconstruction process involves both autologous tissue and implants.
The symmetrization of the opposite breast.
The nipple-areolar complex refinement and reconstruction.
What should I expect during my breast reconstruction surgery recovery?
A 2-day hospital inpatient stay is required before discharge.
→ During the first 30 days, dressing and compression bandages will be changed in the clinic.
→ Physical activities such as driving and practicing sports are prohibited for 4 weeks. (Gradual permissions)
→ Avoid sun exposure for 3 months.
→ The definitive shape and volume will appear from 3 to 6 months after surgery.
→ The second stage of reconstruction can be initiated once the oncologic treatment is finished.
